Following the late sale of Romeo Amane, Rapid Vienna intended to sign a physically strong defensive midfielder on loan, with a preference for an option to buy. Jonathan Varane, a 25-year-old French and Martiniquais international from Queens Park Rangers, was one of three candidates being considered shortly before the deadline. Varane is the half-brother of former professional Raphael Varane and was reportedly a candidate desired by head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup. Thorup knows the player from his time in England at Norwich City. The midfielder, who is only used as a substitute at QPR, was said to be ready for the transfer.
However, the transfer did not proceed for unknown reasons, with conflicting statements emerging from within the club. The Rapid presidency clarified that they did not reject any new signing, including for financial reasons. Managing Director of Sport Markus Katzer had frequently spoken of a tight financial situation. Varane, who has two caps for Martinique, joined QPR in August 2024 and has a contract until 2030. His current market value is €2.50m according to Transfermarkt, and he has also been linked with Saint-Étienne.
