João Gomes, a 25-year-old Brazilian international and Wolverhampton midfielder, received offers from several European clubs, including Zenit de San Petersburgo, Leeds United, Atalanta, and Galatasaray. Some of these offers were for a higher financial value than the one from Atlético de Madrid. Gomes rejected the other offers because his intention is to play for the Spanish club. It is reported that Atlético is now close to signing him on a potential five-year contract.

The transfer is valued at approximately €45 million. Wolverhampton's relegation has made the transfer possible, changing the club's position from last summer when they were not willing to sell him. During early 2026, the reported asking price from Wolves was between €40 million and £43 million, which is approximately €50 million. The central midfielder has 10 caps for Brazil. He joined Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023 for a transfer fee reported to be €18.7 million, and his contract with the club runs until 2030. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is €35.00m.
