Freiburg is interested in signing 26-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen as a potential replacement for their current goalkeeper, Noah Atubolo, who is expected to be sold. It is reported that Scherpen is one of several candidates for the position, along with Mio Backhaus of Werder Bremen, Dennis Seimen, on loan from VfB Stuttgart, and Nahuel Noll, who is on loan from Hoffenheim, with no clear favorite identified yet. The goalkeeper has previously stated his openness to moving to a major league.

Union SG acquired Scherpen from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee of 2 million euros, with a potential for an additional 1 million euros in bonuses. A future sale would not yield a large profit for Union SG, as Brighton is entitled to 40% of any profit made on the transfer. Transfermarkt estimates his market value at 7 million euros. His contract with the Belgian club runs until 2028, and he has yet to be capped by the senior Netherlands national team. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Beşiktaş are among the clubs that have previously been linked with him.
